A George III architectural library bookcase circa 1770.Removed from Walpole House, on Chiswick Mall, the historic home of the Benson family, and belived to have originally been made for their house at Compton Bassett, Wiltshire.Constructed in pine, it does not appear to have ever been decorated. The outer wings are flanked by pilaster columns and capped by pedimented cornices. The plinth and pediment mouldings carved with leaf decoration.The waist moulding ornameted with fluting and patrae, the fluted pilasters are surmounted by ionic capitals, foliate leaf moulding and egg and dart decoration.The cornices decorated with a dentil moulding surmounted by a further moulding having intricate foliate carving. The flats of the cornice fluted and interspersed with large foliate patrae.Circa 1775
